Aoife Moriarty
After an intense period of songwriting and collaboration in 2023/24, Aoife Moriarty celebrates the launch of Artefacts, her second album and her first collection of songs released since 2009’s critically acclaimed Dolls & Jigsaws.
The songs look back to childhood and lost loves, with the advantage of time and distance. For this collection, Aoife limited herself to composing on acoustic guitar, then performed the songs extensively at open mics before beginning the demo and recording process. The album evolved slowly over two years, each artefact being polished with loving care.
The songs are dark and introspective, with a touch of the surreal and something childlike about them. If they had a colour, they would be yellow — like the sudden explosion of colour when Dorothy is whisked out of Kansas and into Oz.
The arrangements bring together acoustic guitar, piano, bass, brass and woodwinds, violin, cello, spoken word and electronic textures.
For the launch at The Cobblestone, Aoife will perform vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and laptop, accompanied by Hugh McCabe on bass, Aisling Bridgman on violin and Sean-nós soprano MYJYN on vocals.
The evening will open with newcomer Mary Margaret McCullough, before Aoife and the band take to the stage to perform Artefacts live.
